If I write an artist statement with the goal of describing my paintings to somebody who cannot see them, I will have to start with the word – textural or pertaining to texture. The smoothness, roughness and softness of the paint on the canvas reveal the feelings of calm, energy and resiliency.

In my painting Above the Skyline, I am depicting the view of the Pittsburgh Southside. The slope of the hill holds hundreds of lines, angles and shapes. The texture is created with the palette knife and is either quickly or slowly pushed across the surface.
The smooth areas tell the story of daily routines. In the rough areas the paint is applied quickly and heavily. On top of all this texture is softness. Paint applied in a slow billowy swirl. The sky above the town in this case is pink and gray showing the resiliency of life itself.
When a viewer takes a moment to look at one of my paintings, I hope they feel my love of design and representational art. The past has come and gone and the future is something to dream away this moment to be revealed in my art.
